This symphony is one of my favorites. I remember the day I first played it on the violin and felt Brahms’s world open up to me.Brahms was a perfectionist that went one step further and burned all of his sketches in order to have full control of his reputation. In other words, he was a really difficult person - much like your upstairs neighbor.
The intimacy that this guy put into his music might explain his crankiness - as if he couldn’t spare any warmth for the “real” world.
I’m really excited to share this music with you. It’s bound to engage corners of your soul that you didn’t even know existed :)
- Daniel Zinn, Artistic Director
Forged in fire, this Symphony in C minor was the result of Johannes Brahms’ 22-year struggle with Beethoven’s towering symphonic legacy. Some even called Brahms' First, Beethoven's Tenth.
“You have no idea how someone like me feels when he hears such a giant marching behind him all the time.” - Brahms
